International PhD/Postdoc Fellow


The NIKI offers a limited number of fellowships for PhD or postdoc researchers who are affiliated with non-Dutch universities. These consist of a maximum of € 350,00 for travel expenses (€ 700,00 for candidates from non-European universities) and free accommodation at the institute and a work station in the library for a maximum duration of three months and a minimum period of six weeks. Accommodation at the institute is compulsory and travel expenses are reimbursed on the basis of supporting documents.

Fellows are expected to devote their full time to the research project, to have no other obligations during the time of the fellowship and to present the results of their research at the end of their stay. to present the results of their research at the end of their stay.

A complete application consists of:

  • CV
  • a description of the research project, including its subject and purpose; the current status quaestionis; an explanation of what the research will contribute; the structure, phases and duration of the project; motivation why a stay in Florence is useful or necessary; the material that will be studied and the institutes that will be visited; the envisaged dates for the stay in Florence
  • two letters of recommendation from doctoral art historians who are familiar with the work of the candidate, sent by referees in question
