NIKI/GWO scholarship

The NIKI/GWO scholarship is managed by the Foundation Friends of the Institute for Art History in Florence.
Grants are awarded for stays of a minimum of one month and a maximum of three months to enable students and researchers from partner universities to carry out research in Florence in the field of art history or related disciplines.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship you need to:

Scholarships are available for students preparing a bachelor’s or master’s thesis. The amount of the scholarship is directly related to the length of the stay: € 500,00 for one month, € 800,00 for two months or € 1.550,00 for three months.

Scholarships are also available for graduate art historians who wish to carry out a PhD or other research under the supervision of a university lecturer: € 650,00 for one month, € 1.100,00 for two months or € 1.550,00 for three months.

For the stay at the NIKI a reduced rate will be charged. In principle, the period of stay falls in the semester after the application has been made.

A complete application consists of:

The scholarship committee, consisting of the treasurer and secretary of the Foundation as well as two external substantive advisors (Dr. J. Keizer and Dr. A.R. de Klerck), assesses the applications according to: originality and feasibility of the research; the quality of its description; the quality and motivation of the researcher.

Applications may be submitted on a continuous basis. You may send the application by e-mail to the secretary of the Foundation, Drs. Bernadette E.C.M. Straetmans at vriendenstichting@nikiflorence.org. The receipt of the application shall be acknowledged. The secretary shall announce the committee’s decision. No correspondence may be entered into concerning the decision.

Applications which do not meet these criteria or which are incomplete will not be considered.

Students residing in Florence under the Erasmus or Socrates programmes are not eligible for this grant.
