Invitation to opening ‘Primavera’ exhibition (9 May to 6 June 2024)

The Netherlands Interuniversity Institute for Art History in Florence (NIKI) presents Primavera (see brochure) , an exhibition of new work by Barcelona-based artist Allison Malinsky.

Allison Malinsky´s exhibition, Primavera, celebrates spring´s arrival and its attributes. The exhibition features 58 abstract works that were inspired by mythological paintings and poetry on the theme of spring from three foundations: Sandro Botticelli’s painting Primavera and his poetic influences, Herman Gorter’s epic Dutch poem May, and her familiar natural surroundings: New Hampshire (USA), Barcelona, and Florence. This exhibition comprises paintings, drawings, and a botanical component in the NIKI garden.  

Malinsky´s vivid oil paintings are centered around recurring themes such as love, beauty, fertility, and the inevitability of impermanence. Additionally, she created a series of 40 watercolors that represent the visual essence and symbolism of each of the 40 identified plants in Botticelli’s Primavera, many of which revolve around the theme of love. Malinsky also planted local wildflowers in the NIKI garden to promote pollination and showcase the botanical beauty of spring in May. Click here for a preview.

Allison Malinsky (b. 1980, Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA) employs abstract painting and sculpture to reflect on universal concepts often found in epic literature.  Visual references to her natural surroundings recur in her colorful work.  Malinsky earned both her undergraduate degree in Studio Art (2002) and her Master of Art (2008) from New York University, the latter in a combined degree with the International Center of Photography (ICP).  

She has exhibited since 2001 and has been granted international residencies and awards, including the Cooper Union School of Art residency, the Vermont Studio Center Painting Fellowship Award, and the Ox-Bow School of Art Fellowship.  In addition to her visual work, she is the founding director and frequent curator of La Huerta.  She has been living and working in Barcelona since 2013.
